Short answer
The Prophet ﷺ said an Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 1782), though scholars say it does not replace an obligatory Hajj. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start about 08/02/2027, depending on the moon sighting. The last Umrah visa is issued on 09/03/2027, around Eid, so apply early.

If you want the last ten nights in Makkah, book the hotel before you think about the visa. The visa application needs your hotel and transport bookings first, and the rooms closest to the Haram for those nights go early. Tell us your dates as soon as you have them and we will check what is still open.
Ramadan 2027: expected dates
These follow Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar (Makkah Live, and Utrecht University's Umm al-Qura table, both checked 19/10/2026). Saudi Arabia confirms the start and end of Ramadan by moon sighting, so any date can move by a day.
| What | Expected date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Ramadan 1448 | Monday 08/02/2027 | The moon is sought on the evening of 29 Sha'ban, expected 06/02/2027 |
| First night of the last ten (night of the 21st) | Evening of 27/02/2027 | One day later if Ramadan starts on 09/02/2027 |
| Night of the 27th | Evening of 05/03/2027 | |
| Last day of Ramadan | 08/03/2027 or 09/03/2027 | 29 or 30 days |
| Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) | 09/03/2027 or 10/03/2027 | The Ministry's season calendar uses 09/03/2027 |
These are expected dates. Saudi Arabia announces the start of Ramadan after the moon is sought on the evening of 29 Sha'ban, so check that announcement before you fix your last-ten-nights plans.
The visa deadline is Eid day
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah published the 1448 AH season calendar on 17/05/2026 (checked 19/10/2026). Three dates matter for a Ramadan trip:
| Season date | Gregorian | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Last Umrah visa issued (1 Shawwal) | 09/03/2027 | About Eid day. In practice, apply before Ramadan |
| Last entry on an Umrah visa (15 Shawwal) | 23/03/2027 | Too late for Ramadan itself |
| Last departure (30 Shawwal) | 07/04/2027 | Everyone on an Umrah visa must have left |
The good news sits in the last row. Umrah visa holders can stay for Eid and still have about four weeks to fly home, unless their own visa ends sooner.
We don't issue visas and can't promise one. The Saudi authorities decide. We make the hotel and transport bookings the application needs and help you through it. See visa information for the steps, and our Umrah calendar for 1448 for the full season.
What the hadith says
Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ spoke to a woman of the Ansar who had missed Hajj with him. He told her to perform Umrah when Ramadan came, and said:
فَإِنَّ عُمْرَةً فِي رَمَضَانَ حَجَّةٌ "For Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward)."
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 1782. The Arabic and English are as given on sunnah.com. A similar report is in Sahih Muslim 1256. In another narration, about Umm Sinan (Sahih al-Bukhari 1863), the wording is "Hajj with me".
What scholars say it means
Scholars agree that the equality is in reward. Umrah does not lift the duty of Hajj from someone who can afford it, and Hajj has rites Umrah does not, such as the standing at Arafah.
They differ on who receives the reward. IslamQA answer 104926 attributes to the four schools, Hanafi included, the view that it covers everyone who performs Umrah in Ramadan, and calls this the most correct view. Ibn Rajab and Ibn Kathir leaned towards people who intended Hajj and could not go, and Sa'id ibn Jubayr is reported to have limited it to the woman herself.
For a ruling on your own case, ask a scholar you trust.
Nusuk permits in Ramadan

Every Umrah needs a permit with a time slot in the Nusuk app. In Ramadan 2024 Nusuk would not issue a second Umrah permit to the same person during the month, and in 2025 the Ministry asked pilgrims to perform Umrah only once in the last ten days. We had not seen a rule for Ramadan 2027 when we checked on 20/10/2026, so check the Nusuk app before you plan a second Umrah.
In practice:
- Book your Umrah permit as soon as your visa is issued and your arrival date is fixed.
- Plan one Umrah per person for the month. Extra tawaf and prayer are still open to you.
- Keep a screenshot of each person's permit QR code in case the signal drops.
- A visit to the Rawdah in the Prophet's Mosque needs its own Nusuk booking. See Rawdah booking.
Our Nusuk app guide shows how to book permits for the whole family.
Which part of Ramadan to choose
Prayer spaces fill early for Maghrib, Isha and Taraweeh. Most families pick one of three shapes:
| Plan | Crowds | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| First half of Ramadan | Busy but calmer than the end | Elderly parents, young children, first-timers |
| Madinah first, then Makkah for the last ten nights | Very busy in Makkah at the end | Adults and older children who want Laylat al-Qadr in Makkah |
| Whole month | Every stage, including Eid | People with time and stamina |
Do your Umrah soon after arrival and before the last ten nights. In a normal month the General Authority lists 9am to 4pm as one of the lighter windows, and in Ramadan the hours after Fajr, when many people rest, are worth trying. We plan the split between Makkah and Madinah around your family and your dates.
The first half suits many families, and it has a cost: you are not in Makkah for the nights when Laylat al-Qadr is most likely. Some parents decide a calm Umrah with a grandparent is worth more than a crowded 27th night. Others decide the other way.
Prices and booking order
Hotel prices near the Haram rise in Ramadan, and rise again for the last ten nights. Rooms close to the gates go first. Ask us for today's price on your dates; we don't quote a percentage here because it changes hotel by hotel.
- Decide your dates and your Makkah and Madinah split by early December 2026.
- Book hotels and transport as early as you can, and earliest of all for the last ten nights.
- Apply for the visa, which needs those bookings first.
- Book flights once the hotels are confirmed, so the dates match.
- Book Nusuk permits once the visa is issued.
New York City public schools' midwinter recess (15/02/2027 to 19/02/2027) and February half term in Birmingham and many other UK areas (the same week) fall in the first half of Ramadan 2027. Check your own school's dates. NYC's spring recess (22/04/2027 to 30/04/2027) comes after Ramadan and after the last departure date for Umrah visas.
The last ten nights

The Prophet ﷺ told believers to seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017): "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." If Ramadan starts on 08/02/2027, the odd nights begin on the evenings of 27/02, 01/03, 03/03, 05/03 and 07/03/2027. If Pakistan or your home country starts Ramadan on a different day, Makkah follows the Saudi count.
Aishah asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she knew which night it was. He taught her this dua:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī. "O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me."
Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3513, which at-Tirmidhi graded hasan sahih. The Arabic, transliteration and English are as given on sunnah.com, which marks "Karim" (Generous) in brackets. More duas are in our Umrah duas guide.
With children or parents, choose a hotel you can walk to from the Haram for these nights.
I'tikaf in the two Holy Mosques
I'tikaf is staying in the mosque for worship, and many people do it in the last ten days of Ramadan. Ask a scholar you trust about its conditions for you, especially for women and for a shorter stay. In Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet's Mosque it needs registration with the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques.
In Ramadan 1447 (2026), news reports said registration opened on 3 Ramadan (20/02/2026) on the authority's e-portal, for i'tikaf from 20 Ramadan to the end of the month. Places were limited to capacity, and accepted applicants got a text message. The Prophet's Mosque set a minimum age of 18. We had not seen the 2027 rules when we checked on 20/10/2026, so watch the General Authority's announcements early in Ramadan.
If i'tikaf is part of your plan, tell us early so the hotel nights and flights fit around it.
Iftar and suhoor
Many people break their fast in Masjid al-Haram with dates and Zamzam water. Charities and individuals serve iftar there under permits from the General Authority, and the rules ask for dry food: pitted dates, cake, pastries and juice. Spaces fill well before Maghrib.
For suhoor, ask your hotel what it serves and when, and whether it is included in your room rate.
Carry dates, water and a mat for each person, and agree a meeting point by gate number before you go in.
Families in Ramadan
With children
In Ramadan 2026 the General Authority ran free nursery centres in Masjid al-Haram, open 24 hours, for boys aged 3 to 6 and girls aged 3 to 9. Ask on arrival whether the service runs again in 2027. Give each child a card with your number. See Umrah with kids.
With elderly parents
In Ramadan 2025 more than one million people used the carts at Masjid al-Haram, and cart reservations moved online. Book a cart as soon as you know your Umrah time. Choose a hotel near a gate with lifts, and do their Umrah early in the trip.
The Qur'an allows a traveller to break the fast and make up the days later (Surah al-Baqarah 2:184 to 185). Hanafi scholars say a traveller who intends to stay 15 days or more in one town is no longer a traveller there; the majority of scholars in the other schools say travel rulings end once you intend to stay more than four days. Ask a scholar you trust which applies to your plan. If your parent has diabetes, a heart condition or takes timed medicine, speak to their doctor before the trip and ask a scholar about their fast. See Umrah with elderly parents.
How Maqam e Haram helps
Our office is in Islamabad and our own team works in Makkah and Madinah. For a Ramadan trip we check your dates against the visa deadline, book the hotels and transport the application needs, and meet you at the airport. We sit with you in the Nusuk app to book Umrah permits for the whole family. In Makkah our staff help you find the right gate and answer WhatsApp when something goes wrong. When does Ramadan 2027 start?
It is expected to start about 08/02/2027, depending on the moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr is expected on 09/03/2027 or 10/03/2027.
When are the last ten nights of Ramadan 2027?
From the evening of about 27/02/2027 until Eid, depending on when the month begins.
What is the last date to get an Umrah visa for Ramadan 2027?
The Ministry's last visa issuance date is 09/03/2027, about Eid day. Apply well before Ramadan.
Can I perform more than one Umrah in Ramadan?
In 2024 Nusuk did not issue a second Umrah permit to the same person in Ramadan, and in 2025 the Ministry asked pilgrims to perform Umrah once in the last ten days. Check the app for the 2027 rule. Extra tawaf is still open to you.
Can I do i'tikaf in Masjid al-Haram in 2027?
In 2026 it needed registration on the General Authority's e-portal from 3 Ramadan. Check for the 2027 rules early in Ramadan.
Is Umrah more expensive in Ramadan?
Yes. Hotels near the Haram cost more in Ramadan, and most in the last ten nights. Ask us for a quote.
Can elderly parents fast while travelling?
The Qur'an allows travellers and the sick to break the fast and make up the days later. Ask your doctor and a scholar about your parents' case.
