Short answer
Children of any age can come on Umrah. Each child needs their own passport, visa, vaccines and place in the Nusuk booking. Prams have not been allowed on the ground floor around the Kaaba, so bring a baby carrier. Put an ID wristband on every young child, agree a meeting point, and do tawaf at quieter times.
Travel advice changes. Before you book, check your government's latest travel advice for Saudi Arabia (UK (opens in a new tab), USA (opens in a new tab), Canada (opens in a new tab)) and make sure your family travel insurance covers your trip. Checked 20/10/2026.

The first thing to do, before the visa, is agree a lost-child plan with your children (it's further down this page). Every gate of the Grand Mosque looks alike to a five-year-old, and the free ID wristbands only help if you get one at the gate on the first day.
Travelling from the UK, USA or Canada with children
For families abroad we sell land packages only: you book your flights, we handle the ground. We are not ATOL protected. We are not TICO registered. We don't sell flights to travellers in the USA.
Most UK families travel in the school holidays, and this season the calendar is awkward. Easter 2027 falls after the last entry date on an Umrah visa (23/03/2027), so October half term, Christmas and February half term are the realistic windows. In Birmingham, for example, February half term is 15/02/2027 to 19/02/2027, and New York City schools have their midwinter recess the same week. That week falls in the first half of Ramadan, which is expected to begin about 08/02/2027, depending on the moon sighting. That means bigger crowds and higher hotel prices, and you may be fasting while you look after small children. Christmas is cooler and usually the easier choice for young families, if you can get the leave. Check your own school's dates, because councils, academies and school boards differ. See our school holidays page and Umrah from the UK.
What age is best?
We found no minimum age for Umrah in the Saudi rules published for 2026. Older pages still quote age 5 or 7 from the Covid period. What matters is what your child can manage.
| Age | What usually works | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2 | Baby carrier for tawaf and sa'i; easy to carry and feed | Nappy breaks, sleep, a carrier instead of a pram |
| 2 to 6 | Short walks, carried part of the way, loves the courtyards | Tiredness, wandering off, toilet breaks |
| 7 to 12 | Can walk tawaf and sa'i with breaks and learn the duas | Heat, boredom between prayers, knowing what to do if lost |
| Teenagers | Can perform Umrah like an adult | Phones, staying together, behaviour in the mosque |
Documents, visas and vaccines
Every child, including a baby, needs:
- their own passport, valid for at least six months from the day you arrive (GOV.UK);
- their own visa application, made on the passport they travel on;
- their own place in the hotel and transport booking, which an Umrah visa needs before it is issued;
- the required vaccines.
The Saudi Ministry of Health's Umrah rules for 1447H (2026) require a meningitis ACWY vaccine for everyone performing Umrah, given at least 10 days before arrival. The text says "all individuals" and gives no age, so ask your travel clinic, or the Saudi embassy, what applies to a baby under one before you book. Everyone arriving from Pakistan, at any age, also needs at least one dose of polio vaccine (bOPV or IPV). Ask the clinic to write the vaccine name and date on the certificate; the Ministry treats an unnamed meningitis vaccine as valid for 3 years only.
Families on mixed passports, for example British children with a parent on a Pakistani passport, should read our guide to the Umrah visa for UK, USA and Canada residents. Each child applies on the passport they travel on.
We don't issue visas and can't promise one. The Saudi authorities decide. We make the hotel and transport bookings the application needs and help you through it.
Nusuk permits for children
You book your children's Umrah permits from your own Nusuk account by adding them as companions. The Ministry's FAQ once said children under five did not need a permit, and the rule has changed more than once since, so follow what the app asks for on the day you book, and book every child at the same time as the adults so you get the same slot. See our Nusuk app guide.
Prams, strollers and baby carriers

The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques set out where prams may go. As reported in January 2024:
| Area | Prams and strollers |
|---|---|
| Mataf ground floor (around the Kaaba) | Not allowed |
| Upper floors of the mataf | Allowed, except when crowded |
| Sa'i area (between Safa and Marwah) | Allowed, except when crowded |
| Courtyards outside | Allowed |
The same report said pram entry was through the King Fahd expansion. That is the latest official word we found, and staff at the gates decide on the day when it is too crowded, so be ready to fold the pram and carry your baby.
What works in practice: a soft baby carrier or hip seat for tawaf, and a light folding stroller for the courtyards, the hotel and the walk to the gate.
Childcare inside the Grand Mosque
The Grand Mosque has run a children's hospitality centre where parents can leave young children while they perform tawaf. The age bands change by season. In 2022 it took girls aged 1 to 10 and boys aged 1 to 8. During Ramadan 2026 a scout-run shift took girls aged 3 to 9 and boys aged 3 to 6. Whether it is open, and for which ages, changes by season, so ask at the gates when you arrive or ask our team to check for you.
A lost-child plan: agree it before you go in

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah advises parents to put an identification bracelet on each child and to avoid peak times.
- Get an ID wristband. The General Authority prints free wristbands with the guardian's contact details. Reports from December 2025 name King Fahd Gate (Gate 79) and King Abdulaziz Gate; one report also names Ajyad. Ask the staff at your gate on the first day if you can't see the machine.
- Put a card with your phone number, including the country code, and your hotel name in your child's pocket.
- Take a photo of each child every morning so you can show what they are wearing.
- Agree one meeting point for the day, outside the gate you came in by, and teach older children its number.
- Teach children to stop and go to a uniformed staff member if they lose you.
- In tawaf, keep small children between two adults or in a carrier, never on the outside of the crowd.
If you lose a child, tell the nearest staff member straight away. For an emergency in Makkah or Madinah, call 911.
When to do tawaf with children
The General Authority's awareness guide gives these crowd times for the Grand Mosque (reported August 2026):
| Crowd level | Times |
|---|---|
| Light | 10 pm to 4 am, and 9 am to 4 pm |
| Moderate | 5 am to 8 am |
| Peak | 5 pm to 9 pm |
With young children, mid-morning after breakfast is usually easiest. Late night works only if the children slept in the afternoon. Avoid the evening peak and Friday prayer. The guide doesn't cover 8 to 9 am or 9 to 10 pm, so treat those as busy until you've seen them yourself.
Heat, water and food
Summer temperatures in Saudi Arabia can pass 50°C (GOV.UK), and children overheat faster than adults.
- Offer water often. Zamzam is available from coolers inside the mosque.
- Use sun hats, light cotton clothes and a small umbrella in the courtyards.
- Walk outdoors early in the morning or after dark, and rest in the hotel in the hottest hours.
- Keep familiar snacks in your bag from home. Hotel breakfasts and the food courts near both mosques have plain options such as rice, bread and fruit, but fussy eaters do better with something they know.
- Pack wipes (unscented if the child is in ihram), a change of clothes, plasters, the child's usual medicines and oral rehydration sachets.
Winter months are cooler and easier for small children. Our Umrah calendar shows the season dates.
Hotels for families with children
Stay close to a gate on level ground, so you can go back between prayers for naps and meals. Ask about family rooms, connecting rooms, cots and extra beds; each hotel has its own rules and charges, and we request what you need when we book. In large towers the lift queue at prayer times can be long, and a lower floor helps when you are carrying a sleeping child.
Our quotes name each hotel and its distance to the gate. Hotels and airlines price children by age, so send us each child's age and we show you exactly what each one costs and includes.
What children can do between prayers
- Learn the talbiyah and a few simple duas before the trip, and say them during Umrah.
- Drink Zamzam and hear the story of Hajar and Isma'il.
- Sit in the open courtyards of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, which are calmer.
- Visit Quba Mosque and see Mount Uhud on ziyarat (see Madinah and Makkah).
Is a child's Umrah valid?
These summarise scholars' positions; ask your own scholar about your family's case.
A woman lifted up a boy to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Would this child be credited with having performed the Hajj?" He said, "Yes, and you will have a reward" (Sahih Muslim 1336, English as on sunnah.com). IslamQA answer 104345 applies the same to Umrah: an Umrah performed for a child below the age of discernment is valid. Ask a scholar you trust whether your child should perform Umrah again after reaching adulthood.
Ihram for kids
What children wear:
- Boys are dressed in ihram garments, the two unstitched cloths, as IslamQA 104345 describes. For babies and toddlers many parents use a small ihram towel set.
- Girls wear normal modest clothes, as adult women do in ihram.
Who makes the intention:
- For a child too young to understand, the guardian forms the intention that the child has entered ihram, holds their hand or carries them through tawaf and sa'i, and keeps them away from what ihram forbids (IslamQA answer 104345). The same answer says it is preferable for the guardian to do their own tawaf first and then the child's.
- A child who understands makes the intention and does the steps themselves, with help.
If a child breaks an ihram rule:
- In the Hanafi school, a small child is not held responsible, and neither is the guardian (Askimam answer on IslamQA).
- In the Shafi'i school, nothing is due for a child under seven. From seven until puberty, any compensation is paid from the guardian's money (Jordan's General Iftaa' Department, on IslamQA).
- IslamQA 104345 says nothing is due if the child does it out of ignorance, and the guardian offers the fidyah if it was deliberate.
Nappies are a common question. In the Hanafi answer above, changing and washing a baby is not a breach that needs a sacrifice, though giving charity was advised. Ask a scholar you trust about your own wudu and tawaf while carrying a baby in a nappy before you travel. Our ihram rules and how to perform Umrah guides cover the adult steps.
Rawdah with children
The Rawdah in the Prophet's Mosque needs a Nusuk permit, and men and women have separate times, so decide in advance which parent takes which child. Older permit rules applied from age 5, and the app shows the current rule when you add a child to the booking. See our Rawdah booking guide.
How Maqam e Haram helps
Our own team in Makkah and Madinah plans trips around babies and young children:
- hotels near a gate on level ground, named in your quote with the distance, with family rooms where the hotel has them;
- airport pickup in a vehicle with room for prams and luggage; if you need a child seat, tell us the child's age when you book so we can try to arrange one;
- help adding every child to Nusuk and booking their permits (Nusuk decides the slots, so we can't promise one);
- on the first day, a walk through the gates and meeting points, where to get ID wristbands and where prams can go.
Our family Umrah packages are built around your dates and your children's ages, and families abroad can book the ground side through Umrah services. WhatsApp or call +92 309 9022120 with your children's ages and we'll suggest rooms and a pace that suits them.
Questions and answers
Is there a minimum age for Umrah?
We found no minimum age in the 2026 Saudi rules. Older pages quote 5 or 7 from the Covid period. Every child still needs a passport, a visa and a booking.
Can I take my baby for Umrah?
Yes. Babies need their own passport, visa and place in the booking. Ask your clinic about the meningitis vaccine for a baby under one, and from Pakistan every baby needs a polio dose. A baby carrier is easier than a pram for tawaf.
Can I take a pram into the Haram?
Not onto the ground floor around the Kaaba, as last reported. Prams have been allowed on the upper floors and in the sa'i area except when crowded. Check on the day.
Do children need a Nusuk permit?
Older rules exempted children under five, but this has changed. Check the Nusuk app when you book and add every child as a companion.
Which vaccines do children need for Umrah?
Saudi rules require meningitis ACWY for everyone performing Umrah, at least 10 days before arrival; ask your clinic about babies under one. Everyone arriving from Pakistan, at any age, needs a polio dose.
What should I do if my child gets lost in the Haram?
Tell the nearest staff member at once. An ID wristband with your phone number makes it much faster to find you.
Is a child's Umrah valid?
Yes. Sahih Muslim 1336 says a child's Hajj counts and the parent is rewarded, and IslamQA applies this to Umrah. Ask a scholar you trust whether they should repeat it as an adult.
Do children have to wear ihram?
Boys wear the ihram cloths and girls wear modest clothes. For young children the guardian makes the intention for them.
What is the best time of day for tawaf with children?
Mid-morning is usually easiest. The General Authority lists 9 am to 4 pm as a light time and 5 pm to 9 pm as the peak.
