Short answer
No province had notified its 2026-27 winter vacations on 27/10/2026. Last year Islamabad closed 26/12/2025 to 03/01/2026, Sindh 22 to 31/12/2025, Punjab 22/12/2025 to 10/01/2026 (then extended to 18/01/2026), and KP's plains 01 to 15/01/2026. This winter's break falls in Rajab 1448, expected from about 10/12/2026.

Every December, parents across Pakistan ask whether Umrah can fit into the school holidays. Each province announces its own dates, usually only a couple of weeks before the break, and Punjab extended its break at the last minute last winter. This page puts last year's notified dates side by side, maps them against the 1448 Hijri calendar and shows how to book so that a late notice doesn't wreck your plans. We will add each 2026-27 notification here, with its date, as soon as it is issued.
If you want a ready-made trip for these weeks, our December Umrah packages page shows what we arrange.
Have the 2026-27 dates been announced?
Not yet, as of 27/10/2026. We opened the Punjab School Education Department's notifications page that day and found no winter notice for 2026-27. Its only 2026 vacation notice is the summer break. A news search for the other provinces turned up only last year's notices. Last year the notices came out in December:
| Province or area | Notice issued last year |
|---|---|
| Punjab | 04/12/2025 |
| Sindh | Reported on 11/12/2025 |
| KP | Reported on 17/12/2025 |
| Islamabad (FDE) | Reported on 18/12/2025 |
| Azad Kashmir | Reported on 20/12/2025 |
So you will probably have to book before your province decides. The section on booking below explains how to do that safely.
Last year's notified dates, province by province
These are the 2025-26 dates, taken from the notifications or from news reports of them. Use them to see the likely pattern, and don't treat them as this year's dates.
| Province or area | 2025-26 winter vacation | Schools reopened |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad (FDE schools and colleges) | 26/12/2025 to 03/01/2026 | 05/01/2026 |
| Punjab (public and private schools) | 22/12/2025 to 10/01/2026, then extended 12/01/2026 to 18/01/2026 for a cold wave | 19/01/2026 |
| Sindh (public and private schools and colleges) | 22/12/2025 to 31/12/2025 | 01/01/2026 |
| KP, summer zone (plains) | 01/01/2026 to 15/01/2026 | After 15/01/2026 |
| KP, winter zone (hilly and snowy districts) | 22/12/2025 to 28/02/2026 | March 2026 |
| Azad Kashmir, warm areas | 29/12/2025 to 10/01/2026 | After 10/01/2026 |
| Azad Kashmir, cold areas | 26/12/2025 to 26/02/2026 | After 26/02/2026 |
A few things stand out.
- Islamabad and Sindh had the shortest breaks, about nine or ten days. That is enough for a 7-night Umrah at a fast pace, and little more.
- Punjab's break ran to about four weeks once it was extended, but the extension came on 10/01/2026, two days before schools were due to reopen. Nobody could have booked flights around it.
- KP's plains and summer-zone schools broke later, in the first half of January.
- Schools in the cold zones of KP and Azad Kashmir closed for about two months, so those families have the widest choice of dates.
Private school chains often follow their province's notice but set their own term dates. Ask your children's school for its calendar before you book.
How the break lines up with the 1448 calendar
Winter 2026-27 falls in the middle of the 1448 Umrah season. These are the expected dates on the Umm al-Qura calendar, and the real start of each month depends on the moon.
| Hijri date | Expected date | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Jumada al-Akhirah 1448 | 11/11/2026 | Before the break |
| 1 Rajab 1448 | 10/12/2026 | Rajab begins, about two weeks before most breaks |
| 27 Rajab 1448 | 05/01/2027 | Falls inside Punjab's and KP's likely break |
| 1 Sha'ban 1448 | 09/01/2027 | Sha'ban begins |
| 1 Ramadan 1448 | 08/02/2027 | Ramadan begins, after the winter break |
| Last Umrah visa issued | 09/03/2027 | Season cut-off |
| Last entry into Saudi Arabia | 23/03/2027 | Season cut-off |
A late-December trip is therefore an Umrah in Rajab, and some families want to be in Makkah around 27 Rajab. Our guide to 27 Rajab and 15 Sha'ban in Makkah sets out what the sources say about those nights, and Umrah in Rajab and Sha'ban covers the months more widely. For the whole season, see the Umrah calendar 1448.
Likely Umrah windows for 2026-27
If this year follows last year's pattern, these are the windows to plan around. Treat them as planning ranges until the notices come out.
| Where your children study | Likely window, based on last year | Trip length that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad (FDE) | Last week of December into the first days of January | 7 nights |
| Sindh | About 22/12 to 31/12 | 7 to 9 nights |
| Punjab | About 22/12 to around 10/01, with a chance of extension | 10 to 14 nights |
| KP plains | First half of January | 10 to 14 nights |
| KP winter zone, Azad Kashmir cold areas | Late December to late February | 14 nights or more, flexible |
Families with children in two provinces, or with one child in a federal school and one in a private chain, should plan around the shorter break.
Booking before the notice comes out
Most families need to book before the dates are official. These steps cut the risk.
- Plan around the core days. Quaid-e-Azam Day falls on Friday 25/12/2026 and is on the 2026 public holiday list. In 2025-26 the days from 26/12 to 31/12 sat inside the breaks in Islamabad, Punjab and Sindh, so a trip built around them was the safest bet last year.
- Ask your school for its own calendar. Many private schools publish term dates early.
- Keep the return flexible. Ask about the change rules on the return ticket before you pay.
- Mind the visa timing. Since the ministry's announcement of 31/10/2025, an Umrah visa has to be used within 30 days of issue, according to press reports. Apply once the dates are firm enough, so the visa doesn't lapse.
- Do the vaccines early. The Saudi Ministry of Health's Umrah health document (the 1447H edition, the latest we found) requires the meningitis ACYW vaccine at least 10 days before arrival and at least one polio dose for travellers from Pakistan. Pakistan has its own airport check too: from Karachi, NADRA-linked vaccination records have been checked since 10/10/2026, and we found no confirmed start date for Islamabad or Lahore. Our NIMS NADRA vaccination certificate guide has the current position.
- Check the news before you fly. Government travel advice for Saudi Arabia changed several times in October 2026. Read your own government's latest advice and check what your travel insurance covers.
Winter Umrah with children
Winter is the coolest part of the year in Makkah and Madinah, which makes the walking easier for children and older parents than in summer. Long-term climate averages (1991 to 2020) put Makkah's January average high at 31°C and low at 19°C. Madinah's January average high is 24°C and its low is 12°C, so pack a warm layer for Madinah evenings. What men may wear over ihram to keep warm is covered in our guide to ihram in winter.
Other things that help in the holiday weeks:
- Perform Umrah at a quieter hour. The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques lists 10pm to 4am and 9am to 4pm as lighter hours at Masjid al-Haram, and 5pm to 9pm as the busiest.
- Keep the first day light. Children tire quickly after a night flight.
- Give every child a card with your hotel name and your phone number.
Our Umrah with kids guide covers prams, lost-child plans and how to pace the rites. For weather by month, see best time for Umrah.
How Maqam e Haram helps
We plan family Umrah trips from our office in Islamabad. We can hold your dates around the likely break, keep the plan flexible until your province notifies, and book hotels close to the Haram and the Prophet's Mosque that suit children and grandparents. We arrange the transfers, the journey between Makkah and Madinah, and ziyarat at an easy pace, with on-ground help in Makkah and Madinah and WhatsApp contact during the trip.
We don't issue visas and can't promise one. The Saudi authorities decide. We make the hotel and transport bookings the application needs and help you through it.
Tell us which schools your children attend and how many of you are travelling. Message us on WhatsApp or call +92 309 9022120 and ask for today's price. Our family Umrah packages and Umrah packages from Pakistan pages show the kinds of trips we build.
Questions and answers
When are winter vacations 2026 in Pakistan?
No province had notified its 2026-27 dates on 27/10/2026. Last year the notices came out in December, between 04/12 and 20/12/2025.
When were Punjab's winter vacations last year?
22/12/2025 to 10/01/2026, then extended from 12/01/2026 to 18/01/2026 because of a cold wave. Schools reopened on 19/01/2026.
When were Islamabad's winter vacations last year?
FDE schools and colleges closed from 26/12/2025 to 03/01/2026 and reopened on 05/01/2026.
Is a winter break long enough for Umrah?
Islamabad's and Sindh's nine or ten days fit a 7-night trip. Punjab's and KP's longer breaks allow 10 to 14 nights.
Will the winter break fall in Rajab?
Yes. Rajab 1448 is expected to begin around 10/12/2026, and 27 Rajab is expected around 05/01/2027, depending on the moon.
Should I book before the dates are announced?
Most families have to. Build the trip around the days between 26/12 and 31/12, ask your school for its calendar, and keep the return flexible.
Is December a busy time for Umrah?
We found no official figures for December crowds. Book hotels and your Nusuk permit early, and check the lighter hours at the Haram.
Is it cold in Makkah in winter?
Mild by Pakistani standards. Makkah's January average high is 31°C and its low is 19°C. Madinah is cooler, with a January average low of 12°C, so bring a warm layer.
Can children perform Umrah in the winter break?
Yes. Plan a gentle pace, perform Umrah at a quieter hour and give each child a contact card.
What vaccines do children need?
The Saudi Ministry of Health document we found (1447H) requires meningitis ACYW for Umrah travellers and polio for those arriving from Pakistan. Ask the Border Health centre and your doctor which doses apply to each child.
