Short answer
If you fly to Jeddah for Umrah, you must be in ihram before the plane crosses or comes level with the miqat, which happens in the air before landing. Put the clothes on at home or at the airport, and make your intention before the crew's miqat announcement. If you fly to Madinah first, you don't need ihram on that flight.
Travel advice changes. On 20/10/2026 the UK government (FCDO) advised against all but essential travel to most of Saudi Arabia (opens in a new tab), Canada's advice (updated 18/10/2026) was to avoid non-essential travel (opens in a new tab), and the US State Department's advisory of 12/10/2026 was Level 3, reconsider travel (opens in a new tab). Check your own government's latest advice before you book, and make sure your travel insurance covers your trip.

On a flight to Jeddah, the miqat line passes beneath you before the plane starts its descent. Landing in normal clothes and changing at Jeddah airport is too late in the Hanafi view and in the answers of the Jordanian Iftaa Department and IslamOnline. So the plan is simple: clothes on before you board, intention before the announcement. The usual slip is falling asleep after the meal and waking on the descent, which is why many families make the intention early.
Below: what to do on direct flights from Pakistan and the UK, on a flight with a stop, and if you go to Madinah first, then the Jeddah question in full. Where the schools differ, the Hanafi view comes first, and every ruling names its published source. For what ihram forbids, read ihram rules for men and women.
What a miqat is
A miqat is a boundary around Makkah. Anyone heading to Makkah for Umrah or Hajj must be in ihram before they cross it.
Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ set Dhul Hulayfah for the people of Madinah, al-Juhfah for the people of Sham, Qarn al-Manazil for the people of Najd and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. He said these miqats are for the people of those places and for anyone else who passes them intending Hajj or Umrah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1524).
Ibn Umar reported that when Basra and Kufa were conquered, people told Umar that Qarn was off their route. He told them to take a point level with it on their own road, and fixed Dhat Irq for them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1531). The fatwa answers cited below apply the same idea, "the point level with a miqat", to flights.
The five miqats

| Miqat | Known today as | Set for | Who uses it today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhul Hulayfah | Abyar Ali, near Madinah | People of Madinah | Anyone travelling from Madinah to Makkah |
| Al-Juhfah | Pilgrims use Rabigh, nearby | People of Sham (Syria) | Routes from the north and north-west |
| Qarn al-Manazil | As-Sayl al-Kabir | People of Najd | Routes from the east, including via Riyadh |
| Yalamlam | As-Sa'diyyah | People of Yemen | Routes from the south and south-east |
| Dhat Irq | Sources give different modern names | People of Iraq | Routes from the north-east |
The modern names come from Islamweb's article on the mawaqit and Saudipedia, and the IslamicPortal answer on Riyadh flights names Qarn al-Manazil as al-Sayl al-Kabir. Saudipedia puts the new as-Sa'diyyah mosque at Yalamlam about 130 km south of Makkah.
Flights from Pakistan
Flights from Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and other Pakistani cities come into Jeddah from the east and south-east, so they pass a miqat in the air before landing. We could not find an airline or fatwa body that publishes which miqat each route passes, and it can change with the flight path. You don't need to know which one. The Jordanian Iftaa Department notes that the captain usually tells passengers when the plane reaches the miqat; what matters is that you are in ihram before that point.
What to do, step by step
- At home, take a bath (ghusl), clip your nails and remove unwanted hair. The Hanafi answer on SeekersGuidance lists these as recommended, with perfume on the body.
- Men put on the two white sheets at home or at the airport before check-in. Women wear their normal modest clothes. Changing at home is easiest; airport washrooms are busy.
- If it is not a disliked time, pray two rak'ahs at home or at the airport. The SeekersGuidance answer lists these among the Sunnahs of ihram.
- In the Hanafi school ihram begins with the intention and the talbiyah, not with the clothes. Until you make the intention, the ihram rules don't apply yet.
- On the plane, listen for the crew's miqat announcement. When it comes, or a little before, make your intention for Umrah and start the talbiyah. If you are not sure the crew will announce it, make the intention earlier, even at take-off. The Jordanian Iftaa Department allows putting on ihram at home, at the airport or on board before the miqat.
- Keep saying the talbiyah until you start tawaf in Makkah. The words are on our Umrah duas page.
Many families make the intention at the airport or soon after take-off, so a sleeping passenger or a missed announcement can't cause a problem. The cost is the whole flight under the ihram rules: unscented wipes only, and for men nothing over the head while they sleep. If you're travelling with a child who will sleep through the descent, that cost is usually worth paying.

Flights from the UK
Direct flights from London, Manchester and Birmingham to Jeddah come down from the north. They also pass a miqat before landing, and again the crew usually announce it. If you change in Riyadh, the IslamicPortal answer on London to Jeddah via Riyadh says the Riyadh to Jeddah leg passes Qarn al-Manazil, about 170 km from Jeddah, and puts the latest point to enter ihram at about 30 to 40 minutes before landing.
The steps are the same as for Pakistan: get ready at home, put the clothes on at home or at the airport, and make the intention before the announcement. On a long overnight flight, you might make the intention after the last meal so you can sleep without worrying about missing it.

Flights with a stop (Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and others)

On a connecting flight, the leg that brings you to Jeddah is what counts. You don't need ihram on the first leg. Darul Uloom Deoband gave this answer to a pilgrim flying from Mumbai via Bahrain: his miqat is that of people flying from Bahrain, and it is better to put on ihram in Bahrain.
In practice: change into ihram clothes during the layover, pray two rak'ahs in the airport prayer room if you can, and make the intention on the final flight before the miqat, or at the transit airport if you prefer.
Flying to Madinah first
If your flight lands in Madinah and you are going there first, you are not heading straight to Makkah, so you don't need ihram on the plane. When you leave Madinah for Makkah, Dhul Hulayfah is your miqat (Sahih al-Bukhari 1524).
By road, enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah, the mosque at Abyar Ali on the road out of the city. Many people put the clothes on at their Madinah hotel and make the intention at Abyar Ali or as they pass it. Tell your driver before you set off that you want to stop there.
On the Haramain train from Madinah, be in ihram before you board. IslamicPortal (Hanafi) says the train passes the point level with Dhul Hulayfah within two to three minutes of leaving, and advises making the intention before it departs or straight after. Darul Ifta Birmingham also advises entering ihram before boarding as a precaution.

The Jeddah question
"Can I fly to Jeddah in normal clothes and put on ihram at the airport?" The scholars don't all agree.
The Hanafi answers we cite, and the Jordanian Iftaa Department, say Jeddah is inside the miqat. A pilgrim heading to Makkah for Umrah must be in ihram before the plane reaches the miqat line, and may not wait until Jeddah. The Jordanian answer says to wear ihram at home or on the plane and make the intention at the point level with the miqat.
A smaller group of contemporary scholars hold that Jeddah airport itself is a miqat for people arriving by air. IslamOnline's fiqh section sets out that view. The Hanafi answers we checked do not follow it, so ask a scholar you trust before relying on it.
There is one Hanafi exception. IslamicPortal explains that if your main purpose is Jeddah itself, for example to stay with relatives or for work, you may cross the miqat without ihram and owe nothing, then enter ihram before entering the Haram when you go for Umrah. The purpose has to be genuine. If Makkah is your real aim and you never enter ihram at the miqat, a dam is due unless you go back.
If you passed the miqat without ihram
A missed announcement, a child asleep, a family who didn't know: it happens. The IslamicPortal (Hanafi) answer says that if you crossed the miqat intending Makkah without ihram, going back to the miqat and entering ihram there removes the penalty. If you already made the intention after the miqat, you still go back, and Imam Abu Hanifa says you must say the talbiyah at the miqat for the dam to fall away. If you could go back and don't, a dam is due.
Our Umrah mistakes and penalties page explains the dam and how it is paid. Ask a scholar in Jeddah or Makkah straight away, before you start Umrah.
Quick checklist for the flight
- Ghusl, nails and hair at home.

Questions and answers
When should I wear ihram on a flight to Jeddah?
Put the clothes on before boarding or during the flight, and make your intention before the crew announce the miqat.
Which miqat do flights from Pakistan pass?
It depends on the flight path, and no airline publishes a route list. The crew usually announce it. Make the intention early to be safe.
What is the miqat for flights from the UK?
It depends on the route. A flight via Riyadh passes Qarn al-Manazil on the last leg, according to IslamicPortal. On direct flights, listen for the crew's announcement and enter ihram early.
Can I put on ihram at home?
Yes. Wear the clothes from home and make the intention at home, at the airport or on the plane, as long as it is before the miqat.
Can I make the intention before the miqat?
Yes. The Jordanian Iftaa Department and the Hanafi answers allow entering ihram before the miqat, and the ihram rules apply from that moment.
Is Jeddah a miqat?
In the Hanafi answers and the Jordanian Iftaa Department's, no: Jeddah is inside the miqat. A minority of contemporary scholars disagree.
Do I need ihram if I fly to Madinah first?
No. Enter ihram when you leave Madinah for Makkah, at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali).
What if I have a connecting flight?
The leg that brings you to Jeddah is what counts. Put on ihram during the layover.
What if I missed the miqat?
In the Hanafi school, go back to the miqat and enter ihram there, and nothing is due. If you could go back and don't, a dam is due.
Can a woman on her period enter ihram on the flight?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ told Aisha to do everything a pilgrim does except tawaf until she was clean (Sahih al-Bukhari 305).
